Terrestrial or land snails evolved from mostly freshwater or marine snails and have become one of the most successful animals animal groups on earth, which more than 25,000 species and counting!
Many are very beautiful and interesting. Some live on the ground while some live on trees. Many species can be found in the tropics and many are endemic which makes them very vulnerable to extinction; rate of extinction is second to the amphibian extinction rate.
More recent events is the microsnail discovered living only in Gunung Kanthan, Malaysia; Charopa lafargei Vermeulen, J., Marzuki, M. & Seddon, M.B. 2014, living precariously next to quarrying activities by the cement company Lafarge. Ironically named after it to bring media attention to the plight of this tiny creature that will be hardly noticed when it is gone forever. It is our hope also that we can bring attention to the many species we have in our list.
