This species of spectacular murex ranges from North China to Japan, but the best specimens with extraordinary wings mostly come from Korean waters. The ones from outside Korea with smaller or no wings are called form coreanicum.

The most sought-after species from Korea and also from the sub-family ocenebrinae. They are now getting rarer due to probably climate changes and not so common in diveable depths. Also, they are of no commercial importance.
