Animal broadly ovate, always eroded. Median valves with sculpture usually obliterated by erosion. Girdle fairly wide, usually banded with white and dark brown or black, sculptured with pointed to blunt, straight or curved conical spines varying in length, up to 1.5 mm long.

Endemic to Australia: Magnetic Island, Qld, southwards to Port Hacking, NSW.
Lives on the upper surfaces of rocks, in crevices and on dead oyster shells, from high tide down to mid-tide level. In NSW, very common in the harbours but rare on the exposed open coast. In Queensland it is common on the open coast.
