Ovate shell, equivalve; its six principal ribs bear strong, well-spaced spines. The interstices have several ribs which bear short, sharp spines. Internally it is white with purple and yellow, variegated, crenulated margins.

The Thai form is slightly different by having a much broader and flatter main spines on the periphery.
