Now the Indian ocean shells are the nominate form and the specimens from Indonesia are called Conus abbas johnabbasi. Shallow water to about 50m on coral reefs, often beneath coral boulders. Some confuse it with C. canonicus and textile but for me, it has an unmistakable spire and shape, very consistent within this species and after viewing many specimens, you will immediately tell them apart. Pattern is variable but also somewhat different from the regular textile.

This subspecies is named in honour of John Abbas, famous explorer of Indonesian shells, however, The nominate species Conus abbas abbas has no relation to him at all. I find it a nice and funny co-incidence.
