The arabian volute is a variable species in terms of colour, pattern and size. It ranges from 75mm up to larger than 200mm. The name derives from the zigzag markings on the shell that was thought to look like arabic writings, thus the given name. There is no operculum for this endemic New Zealand species. Individuals have a large grey to brown foot, flecked with purple and orange markings.

These sea snails live in sub-tidal waters on soft sediments. They are able to move quite quickly on the soft substrate. They feed on bivalves that they smother using their large foot. The rounded, thin shelled eggs of this species are laid on stones or other shells.
