Indo West Pacific, regularly found in the Philippines but uncommon elsewhere. In sand from 20~80m deep.

Averaging 45~70mm. World record size of 220mm not possible. Rather T. lischkeana than T. tessellata. Largest possible is 80+mm.

The main feature of this species is the strong folded twist of the canal. Closes congener is T. allium but allium lack the strong twisted canal, near spherical shape, constant outwards reflected aperture and prominant spiral cords of T. tessellata and T. tessellata has a very strurdy and solid shell compared to the fragile shell of T. allium. Also, the collar on the inner lip extending over the umbilicus is present only in T. tessellata.
