The type locality is from Natal, South Africa. Ranging from the Indo-West Pacific from North East South Africa at least as far as Fiji, From Southern Japan to Northeast Australia. Common in intertidal sand flats but also found till 50m deep. Averaging 100mm but can grow above 120mm. The smooth protoconch consist of 2.5 whorls, and it is very conspicuous because it is dark brown to purple or even black contracting strongly with the pale teleconch, and providing an important recognition character of T. allium.
