Small to medium, somewhat elongated, lightweight but strong, slightly convex, equivalve, unequal ears. Valves bear about 30 radial rounded ribs with small erect prickly scales. A great number of colour variations from white, orange, brown to purple with irregular conventric or cream markings. When young most pecten species are attached by byssus and become free-living when adult. However, M. varia retains this attachment life-long.
